What's in the pack

This pack comes in the form of a .kra file and a .psd file with a female character sprite. The resolution is 820x1080 px. The files are structured in a way that you can easily customize the sprite, all you have to do is to hide and unhide layers to choose what elements you want to appear. I recommend you use the .kra version if possible, since the files were created on krita and the .psd file might have compatibility issues depending on the software you decide to open it on.

Krita is a free open source software so don't worry you won't have to buy a software to be able to open the .kra file. You can also change the colors of anything on this pack, more information on the "Instructions" section of this page. In the future I'd like to include video instructions, if you have any trouble understanding how the files work feel free to ask me. The same instructions are provided in a file with the asset pack.

The following elements are currently available in this first version of the pack:

Examples

To show off the capabilities of this asset pack I tried creating a couple different looking characters with a good variety of outfits.  This also served as a test to see how customizable the pack actually was. I believe that even in this first state the pack already shows good variety. While it's obvious that the characters are all from the same base, their designs are still distinct enough. With future updates I hope to be able to create even more variety.

I also made 20 expressions with the pack to show off some of the many expressions that you can create using this asset pack. I wanted you to be able to make very expressive characters instead of being limited to a certain amount of pre made expressions.

What can I use this pack for?

You can

  • Use it for personal projects
  • Use it for commercial projects
  • Modify any assets to fit your game
  • Use the sprites in games with NSFW content as long as it's not illegal content (basically NSFW content including child characters isn't allowed)
  • Use this as an avatar for a video or to promote a product.

You can't

  • Resell the sprites as they are
  • Resell modified versions of the sprites
  • Reupload the sprites as they are
  • Reupload modified versions of the sprites
  • Use these sprites without credit
  • Add these sprites to merchandise without permission
  • Add these sprites to print on demand services without permission

If you have any doubts on what you can and can't use it for, please just hit me up on the comments here or on my email: justdorathy@gmail.com, Make sure to title your email as "Question: Visual novel girl pack".

Regarding the merch and print on demand services all I want is for you to ask me first so we can arrange a deal maybe even custom art for the merchandise instead of using the sprites as they are.

How should I credit you?

You can credit me in any of the following places:

  • At a credit's screen at the end of your game
  • At a credit's section in the game menu
  • At the website where the game is available
  • Or in a note alongside the game's files

Any of the above will be considered credit given, but I strongly prefer the credit at the end of the game or in a credit's page in the menu. You can do all of them if you want but only one will suffice.

The links you can use to credit me are:

About NSFW art

Since you are allowed to use this pack in a NSFW game, you may be wondering if I'll be adding any NSFW elements, like NSFW outfits and expressions, in future updates.

I personally do not feel comfortable creating nsfw art, so I don't plan to include them on the pack.  I'll do things like bikini's for instance but I won't be doing any explicitly sexual outfits.

I thought I would mention this so you can know ahead of time that this pack will be completely SFW in case you plan to create an NSFW game. If your game is a NSFW game you are still free to use these sprites. You are also free to modify this pack or comission someone else to modify it for you. I'll leave alongside the pack a folder named artist presets, with  instructions on what software I used, the brush I use and how I shade everything so the artist can have an easier time editing the base.

What will be in future updates?

These are the things I want to add in future updates of this pack. This list is here so you know what major updates I plan to do, so this pack can be considered released.

Also feel free to leave comments with what you'd want me to add first so I can prioritize updates that are more interesting to you guys. This list contains the bigger updates I want to make, but if you have a request for a minor update (for instance a specific mouth shape or eyebrow shape) leave it in the comments so I can add this as soon as I get the time.

Hair textures and hairstyles

Currently I only have straight hair textures available. While you can create a good variety of characters using the available hairstyles, more hair textures would make characters more customizable and more inclusive.

I plan to add specifically, wavy hair, curly hair with large curls, curly hair with small curls, dreads and spiky hair. If you believe I left a specific texture out of this list, please leave a comment so I can include it on future updates. I also will include more hairstyles, like ponytails and braids.

More shirt styles

I want to include more shirts. Currently we only have four bases, the button up, the basic, the long neck and the cropped. I want to include more shirt cuts like v necks, strapless shirts and bare shoulder shirts too. I believe 10 shirt bases would be enough to provide the level of variety I want to have.

More coat styles

Currently I only have three coats and two hoodie styles. I want to have more variety in the future and make sure all coats have a closed and open version. On the coats section of the pack I want to have at least 10 different coats, this includes hoodies.

Acessories

Rings, necklaces, and hairclips. Specially for the tied up hairstyles, having the option to have a ribbon on the hair for instance would be interesting. I'm also thinking of adding scarves, gloves and glasses to this pack. I don't have a final number set for the acessories yet.

Hats

I currently haven't added any hats, I think we can have hats. This might be tricky since I'd have to make sure it fits well any hairstyles but I'll do my best to make something that fits all hairstyles and textures. I still haven't decided on numbers for hats since I haven't created any and I believe it will be easier to scope how hard it would be to add each hat once I have all the hairstyles.

Hand holding ojects

I want to add more hand positions, specifically one holding things with various options of objects. If there is a specific object you'd like to see please leave a comment I'll take that into consideration for the next update. Currently I'm thinking of cups with drinks, a knife for a horror setting and a love letter for a romcom story, but I know there will be lots of other objects I'm not including that would be good to have.

More eyes

Currently I offer three eye shapes, I want to have a couple more to allow for more character variations. I think having 10 eye shape variations would be a good number to create the level of variety I want.

Scars/Tatoos

I want to add a variety of scars (both on face and arms) and a couple different tatoos. While I won't be able to have all the tatoos imaginable, I think having around 15 different tatoo designs would be interesting. All of them would be placed on the arms. I also want to add some skin conditions like vertiligo, burns from accidents, and acne.

Other packs

In the future I'd also like to create more packs with themed outfits to be bought separately. While they won't be a part of this pack they will always be compatible with this pack and will be useful to those who are using this to create their visual novel. I want to create a good asset library of compatible visual novel assets in the future, since mixing assets from different asset packs can create a mismatched look for the game.

These other packs won't be only be sprite packs, I also plan on creating background packs and I want to have some customization options for them too, but I'll get into that once I have those packs done.

Comissions

I'll also be offering comissions in the same style as all of my packs so you can comission me for special scenes, specific backgrounds or even a customized character on this base. Using some of these premade assets combined with my comissions should be a good way to save some money when creating your first vn. You can contact me for comissions through my email: justdorathy@gmail.com.

Comission prices

Custom exclusive outfit - 20 USD

Custom exclusive character - 30 USD to 50 USD (Depends on character complexity)

Backgrounds/CGs - 40 USD to 100 USD (Depends on background or scene complexity)

If you are interested in comissioning me for something other than these just explain it on the email and I'll get back to you within 48 hours with the prices.

Since these comissions are specifically made to be created over this pack and to be compatible with it I'll include the pack for free if you comission me. I hope that in the future I'll have enough packs that you will only need to comission me for CGs.

If you don't want to comission me specifically, but wish to comission someone else, all packs include an artist instructions folder that includes the brush I use, the software and how I shade so they can have an easier time matching the style.

Instructions

These instructions are an overview of the layer structure I created for these files to help with some things that might be tricky to understand. I believe most of the layer structure is very intuitive, but I decided to explain a couple things that I felt might become confusing.

How do the layers work?

To customize your character you'll use the layer docker on krita. All the different elements are grouped together in the most intuitive way I could. The main four components are head, build your own outfit, ready outfits and the back hair.

The head component is where you'll be able to choose the fringe, eye shapes, build expressions and so on.

The build your own outfit is a body base that allows you to build a simple outfit choosing elements like shirts, coats, pants and skirts.

The ready outfits and one piece outfits group contains a series of different outfits that are pre designed. All you'll be able to change about these is the colors and if available, the cloth pattern,

The back hair is just the back of the hair that is in a separate group since it would have to be behind the body.

To create your own character I recommend saving this as a separate file and deleting any elements you don't plan on using. I found this to be the most efficient way to create a character.

While most of the layers are pretty intuitive there is one element I'd like to explain, and it's how the arms work. The arms are separated from the body to allow for more arm poses, so you'll se that there is a body base group and an arms group. In the arms group you'll find all the variations you need for the poses with left and right arm being separated.

All the sleeves are also in the arm group, mostly because which sleeve you'll be using will depend on the pose of the arm, so I felt like putting them together would make the most sense. You can see there are two positions that would change how the sleeves are positioned so each arm is divided into arm down or arm up position.  For arm up, there are different hand positions that can be found in the bases group, and the sleeves are all in the sleeves groups.

All the different shirt sleeves are compatible with all shirts, I made it like that so you can mix and match the different sleeves to the different shirt bases. The coat sleeve is the same for all coats at the moment and the hoodie sleeve is also the same for both hoodie variations. I'll be adding more sleeve variations in the future.

How do I change colors?

Changing colors in this pack was made as easy as possible. All layers that have the term color in their name are color layers, which means you can change the color through it. They are created with a mask layer attached to them so all you have to do to change the color is pick the color you want from the color picker or a color palette and then filling the entire layer with the bucket tool. Since it has a mask attached to it, the color will stay within the lines.

To fill the entire layer with the bucket tool just make sure the settings you have are set to fill the entire selection/layer.

Why are some layers named no change?

There are some layers and layer groups named "no change" in the files. These layers are any layers that were not thought out for you to modify. These layers are things like lineart and shading that you won't need to mess with to customize your character. While you will be editing color layers for example, or hiding certain layers these layers are not supposed to be messed with. I did this since the layer structure of this pack is already pretty complicated and like this I can reduce the amount of information you have to take in when trying to create your character.
